Rib Fabric for T-Shirts & Garment Trims
Rib Fabric is a knitted fabric recognized by its vertical ribbed texture and natural crosswise stretch. Manufacturers commonly use it for T-shirt necklines, sleeve cuffs, sweatshirt cuffs, waistbands and other garment finishing areas where flexibility is important.
Rib fabric uses alternating knit and purl stitches to create its characteristic raised vertical lines. The exact appearance and stretch depend on the rib construction, yarn, fibre composition and knitting specification. Common structures include 1×1 and 2×2 rib.
Unlike single jersey, piqué or interlock, rib fabric often serves as a garment component rather than the main body fabric. For example, a round-neck T-shirt may use single jersey for the body and matching rib fabric around the neckline. Sweatshirts and hoodies can also use ribbed cuffs and waistbands.
Cotton, cotton-polyester blends and fabrics containing elastane can all be used for rib constructions. Therefore, stretch, recovery, softness and dimensional behaviour depend on the actual fibre composition.
Applications for Necklines, Cuffs & Waistbands
For customized apparel, Rib Fabric helps provide flexible finishing around areas that need to expand during wear. Neck ribs, for example, need enough flexibility to pass comfortably over the head while maintaining an appropriate shape after use.
Rib constructions can also complement polo collars, cuffs, sweatshirts, hoodies and selected fashion garments. Adding elastane to suitable rib fabrics can increase stretch and recovery, although the exact performance depends on the specification.
Colour matching is particularly important because rib often appears next to the main garment fabric. The rib and body should therefore be selected together when close colour coordination is required.

Embroidery can be applied to selected rib fabrics, but the fabric's stretch and vertical texture require careful stabilization. Suitable backing helps control movement during stitching. Keep stitch density appropriate to the construction and avoid unnecessarily dense designs on highly stretchable rib. For most T-shirts, polos and sweatshirts, embroidery is usually placed on the main garment body rather than the rib trim.
